What Is a Periodontist?

Many people learn about periodontists when their general care dentist suggests they receive treatment from one. There are many similarities between dentists and periodontists, but also some important differences. While both dentists and periodontists have to complete an undergraduate degree followed by a degree in dentistry, periodontists undertake additional schooling to become experts in diagnosing issues related to and providing treatments to correct issues that affect the periodontium.

As is the case with dentists, periodontists can also specialize in a wide range of treatments, which may include preventative care (periodontal maintenance), halting periodontal disease (osseous surgery, LANAP, scale and root planing), cosmetic treatments, (teeth whitening and gum contouring), and dental surgery (dental implants).

What Type of Procedures Do Periodontists Perform?

Periodontists specialize in preventing, diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants. Treatments for periodontal disease include scale and root planing, gum contouring, osseous surgery, and reversing lost tissue and bone. At Coastal Jaw surgery, we also specialize in placement of dental implants. In fact, along with maintaining a private practice, Dr. Pikos founded the Pikos Institute in 1990. This globally recognized teaching organization provides surgical and technology-based training for clinicians throughout the country to perform predictable, prosthetically driven implant dentistry.

As leaders in the field of implant dentistry, we proudly offer free consultations for patients interested in seeing if dental implants are a viable solution for them. This consultation includes a thorough examination by one of our implant specialists, a full 3D, high-resolution X-Ray of your jaw and bone structure to inform your treatment plan and ensure optimal dental implant placement, and a computer-generated image of what your implant and restoration will look like.

Regular Periodontal Maintenance

One of the most important services we provide our clients is regular periodontal maintenance, which we recommend scheduling every six months, or every three or four months for patients who are more susceptible to periodontal disease. During these regular appointments, we will perform a deep cleaning. Scheduling these regular appointments also allows us to monitor your oral health and provide treatment recommendations for any issues that may be identified.

Indications That You Should See a Periodontist

Oftentimes patients are recommended periodontal care when their general dentist identifies an issue that they are not qualified to address. Common indications that you may have developed gum disease and should seek periodontal care include:

  • Gums that bleed after brushing or flossing your teeth
  • Swollen and/or tender gums
  • Gum recession
  • Mouth sores
  • Pain or discomfort while chewing
  • Chronic halitosis that persists even after brushing your teeth
  • Change in the fit of your dentures
  • Loose teeth
