Are there any problems that can arise after dental implants are placed?
Unfortunately, there are some problems that can arise in patients with dental implants. If dental implants are not properly maintained, issues with bone and soft tissue can arise and lead to bone loss, implant mobility, and even loss of the dental implant. Peri-implantitis is a term we use to describe a cas such as this. Peri-implantitis must be treated immediately to save the implant. Treatment of peri-implantitis involves cleaning out the area, removing harmful bacteria that cause destruction and potentially building back the bone that was lost in certain cases if possible.
What is Peri-Implantitis?
Peri–implantitis is destructive inflammation affecting the hard and soft tissues that surround dental implants. Periodontal pathogens found around implants affected by peri-implantitis are similar to those found with certain types of periodontal disease.
How is Peri-Implantitis avoided?
Just like you’d perform preventative maintenance on your car such as having the oil changed or tires rotated, you must take routine maintenance of your dental implants seriously. In order to avoid issues with peri-implantitis, it is imperative to routinely see your periodontist and hygienist in order to maintain implants after they are placed. This is a good way to prevent problems as well as have a better chance of spotting any issues that could turn into bigger problems down the road.
