Sedation Dentistry to reduce anxiety and offer patients a much more relaxed dental appointment.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to ensuring that our patients are as calm and comfortable as possible, which is why we offer varying levels of sedation. Oral sedatives and nitrous oxide are effective methods for reducing anxiety and placing patients in a much more relaxed state of mind. Additionally, our Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are certified to provide and take continuing education on safe administration of intravenous (IV) anesthesia. IV anesthesia is the deepest level of sedation that can be administered and can include comprehensive conscious sedation and general anesthesia.

At Coastal Jaw Surgery, every patient who walks through our door will receive VIP Treatment delivered by dedicated professionals who are leaders in their fields and ready to provide you with personalized care using the most cutting-edge dental technology available. For over three decades, we have proudly provided thousands of patients in the Tampa Bay area with dental implant and oral surgery services, including oral surgery, Same Day Teeth®, and periodontal services. Whether you are scheduled for a complicated surgical procedure, have dental phobia or anxiety, or struggle with sitting still for extended periods of time, our clinic is committed to ensuring that you receive necessary care as efficiently as possible in a manner designed to keep you relaxed and comfortable. To schedule an appointment or learn more about our dental sedation options, contact us today at (800) NEW-LOOK.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Understandably, one of the most common questions our patients asks regarding sedation dentistry is, “Is sedation dentistry safe?” The short answer is yes, however, although dental sedation is safe to administer to nearly all patients and side effects are minimal, as with any administration of a drug or medication, sedation dentistry can result in certain side effects in some patients, including the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Faintness, lightheadedness, or dizziness
  • Blurry vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Excessive sweating or shivering

Types of Sedation

Although there are several different methods for administering dental sedation, sedation types are typically classified as being minimal, moderate, or deep. Local anesthesia is commonly administered with the express purpose of blocking pain sensation during and following a surgical procedure.

Minimal sedation is typically administered orally, has very little impact on the patient’s level of awareness, and is a safe and effective way to reduce anxiety. Patients who still feel anxious during their procedure can also receive Nitrous Oxide Sedation, which is administered through a nasal mask and has analgesic and anesthetic properties. Unlike other forms of dental sedation, the effects of Nitrous Oxide will dissipate very soon after administration is ceased.

Moderate sedation will depress consciousness, but the patient will still be able to respond to external stimuli, such as touch or verbal commands, though they may feel incredibly relaxed or very sleepy. Typically reserved for more intensive oral surgical procedure, our team of Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are trained to administer deep sedation in the form of Conscious and Unconscious IV Sedation. Also known as “twilight sleep”, Conscious IV Sedation is recommended for patients who would otherwise require multiple visits to have a procedure performed, or for patients who have high dental anxiety or a very sensitive gag reflex.

More intensive oral surgical procedure may require a combination of oral and IV medication (general anesthesia) which will result in the patient being unconscious throughout the entire procedure, with no recollection of the procedure occurring. Although general anesthesia is safe and highly effective in ensuring that patients can receive complex oral treatment, it is common to feel groggy following administration of IV sedation. As such, it is important to arrange for someone to drive you home following your procedure.

Cost of Sedation Dentistry

Unfortunately, many insurance providers consider dental sedation optional, and do not provide coverage for its administration; however, the overall cost of having the procedure performed may be covered under your plan. At Coastal Jaw Surgery, we are committed to providing you with high-quality oral care in a manner that is simple and efficient. To help meet your unique budget and needs, we offer the following financing options:

  • Carecredit® Healthcare Financing (interest free financing for dental care)
  • GreenSky® Patient Financing
  • Lending Club Patient Financing

We also accept traditional insurance, and as courtesy to you, are happy to file and track your insurance claim and assist with insurance family plans. To help facilitate this process, please have your insurance information prepared at your appointment, including your insurance and identification card. To help you maximize your benefits, we are also happy to provide a written diagnostic report and X-rays to your insurance company if necessary.

Please note: Dental insurance only covers part of your total expenses and remaining out-of-pocket expenses must be paid following service. We accept cash, debit cards, and most major credit cards (MasterCard, VISA, Discover, American Express).
