What are peri-implant diseases?
Inflammatory conditions which affect the hard and soft tissues around dental implants are known as peri-implant diseases. Bacteria can sometimes build up on the base of the implant below the gumline, just like with natural teeth. The bacteria, over time, can cause irritation in the gum tissue, resulting in inflammation and damage to the tissue. If not addressed early, the bone structure below the implant may deteriorate. In this blog post, we’ll look at the two categories of peri-implant diseases and discuss how a periodontist can help address these issues.
The two categories of peri-implant diseases
With this type of peri-implant disease, gum inflammation is centered at the soft tissues of the dental implant; with this type of peri-implant disease, the bone has not yet been affected. Peri-implant mucositis is often a precursor to peri-implantitis. Peri-implant mucositis, evidence suggests, may be treated and may be reversible if caught early.
With peri-implantitis, both inflammation in the soft tissue and deterioration in the bone are found. Peri-implantitis usually requires surgical treatment.
Signs of peri-implant diseases
Symptoms of these diseases may be similar to symptoms of gum disease, including red gums or bleeding when brushing. Just like natural teeth, implants require good brushing and flossing habits as well as regular dental visits.
Risk factors for developing peri-implant diseases and how a periodontist can help
Previously diagnoses periodontal disease, poor dental care routines, diabetes, and smoking are common risk factors for developing peri-implant diseases. Routine monitoring of dental implants and routine periodontal examinations are key parts of the health of your mouth and the longevity of your dental implants.
Dental implants function just like natural teeth and their health and durability can be maintained just like your natural teeth. With good oral care habits, your dental implants can remain functional and aesthetically pleasing.
