Periodontal disease, or gum disease, arises when bacteria in plaque builds up at the gumline. The gums surrounding the tooth become inflamed when the bacteria grows. When left untreated, the inflammation can cause deterioration in the gums and underlying supporting bone structure. Gum recession and tooth loss may result from this inflammation. Gum disease may also be associated with other diseases like heart disease and diabetes.
Periodontal disease is preventable, though. In this blog post, we’ve compiled a list of habits that can help you prevent gum disease.
Habits for Healthy Gums
1. Brush your teeth.
Brushing your teeth is the essential starting place for a good dental care routine. Brushing after meals can go a long way to remove food and plaque trapped between your teeth and gums. Brush your tongue as well to remove any bacteria that may be hiding there.
2. Floss at least once a day.
To prevent periodontal disease, floss at least once a day to remove food and plaque along the gumline that your toothbrush can’t reach.
3. Use mouthwash.
Using mouthwash helps reduce plaque and flush out remaining food particles.
4. Know your risk factors.
If you smoke or eat a poor diet, your risk of developing periodontal disease is greater. Genetics, aging, and other factors may also increase your risk of developing periodontal disease. Addressing your risk factors with your periodontist will help ensure you get the best care.
5. See a periodontist.
Getting an annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation can help ensure you and your periodontist can address and prevent problems before they become severe. A CPE will evaluate your overall teeth health, plaque level, gums, bite, bone structure, and other risk factors for periodontal disease. Identifying symptoms of periodontal disease early on is essential to the long-term health of your teeth and gums.
